A lot has changed for Birds of Bellwoods since the release of ‘A Year Ago’ a year ago…

Here on Born Music, we featured Canadian alt-folk band Birds of Bellwoods‘ chilled track ‘A Year Ago’ (would you believe) a year ago! The track soon went on to feature on Spotify’s Canada Viral Hits playlist.

The following month, the four-piece played at Toronto’s prestigious Roy Thomson Hall before releasing their second equally chilled single ‘Catching Up’. Like the gents they are, they went on to play The Phoenix Concert Theatre with massively popular rock quintet Arkells for Canadian Cancer Society.

September was exciting for the boys, kicking off the month by playing three shows at Le Festival YUL EAT, Montreal and then opening for Virginia to Vegas and Wintersleep at Dalhouse University, Halifax. On the 23rd, the band held a release party for their new album Victoria at Mod Club Theatre, Toronto.

After all that excitement, Birds of Bellwoods embarked on a thirteen-date Autumn tour with The Pick Brothers in October and released the video for ‘Let You Go’ while on the road. November saw the four-piece play for Canada’s Walk of Fame showcase at The Great Hall in Toronto.

By December, the Canadians hadn’t quite had enough of touring for 2017 and so embarked on a New York City tour including a private showcase by ConcertPass at Soho House and shows at Sofar Sounds and Rockwood Music Hall.

Kicking off 2018 in style, Birds of Bellwoods released a video cover of groovy soul collective Portugal The Man’s ‘Feel It Still’ and played their first show of the year on the 20th at Windsong Music Festival, North Bay. Continuing their Winter festival streak, the boys played a stripped down set at Ottawa’s Ice Dragon Boat Festival.

Throughout April and May, the Canadians embarked on their Spring tour, impressively selling out Burnstown and Stittsville, and ‘Let You Go’ was finally released everywhere, later featuring on Apple Music’s Canadian Indie Radio Playlist.

In May, the four-piece returned to their hometown of Toronto to play a sold-out show at Canadian Music Week, Horseshoe Tavern. The following month saw a string of shows including playing The Danforth Music Hall with UK band Gomez, a free show at Batch in support of Music Therapy, the Imagine Dragons pre-show at River Bar’s Budweiser Stage, and Ottawa’s Dragon Boat Festival (this time ice-free). As if that wasn’t enough, so far this month they have continued their festival streak by making appearances at Mariposa Folk Festival, Festival d’été de Québec and Hillside Festival.

Coming up, Birds of Bellwoods will be continuing their Summer tour in Canada as well releasing their brand new single ‘Melatonin’, out on the 27th July! Can’t wait.

Birds of Bellwoods provided us a personal insight into their year: “Since releasing ‘A Year Ago’, a lot has changed for us. We have chosen EOne Music Canada as our record label, toured outside of Canada for showcases in the US, and as we write this we are on tour performing at festivals including Osheaga, Hillside, Festival D’été, and more. We have also released two more singles from our album Victoria – available on Spotify and all other streaming services.”
