Not many bands can say that they got themselves on Radio 1 before they’d even released a single, but that’s exactly what’s happened with Birmingham’s Riscas with their first demo ‘Panic Like Tom’. It’s been a bit of a mental time for these lads, and now with their first actual single, ‘Talk Your Mind’, out, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to have a chat with them.

“I feel our sound is very summertime, tropical with a slight punch,” they explain. A fitting description for their guitar riff heavy sound, complemented by frontman George’s unique vocals. Releasing the demo to test the waters and just to have something out there for people to hear, the last thing they expected was a recurring slot on Radio 1. Becoming Radio 1 Introducing’s Artist of the Week was “an absolute dream come true for us all,” they say, especially as it all happened so fast.

“’Talk Your Mind’, we feel, is a great follow up, it’s the track we’ve wanted to release for a while,” they reveal, “we’ve put a lot of time and energy into this track.” They recently launched said single at Birmingham’s Sunflower Lounge – a sold out one at that – and have a music video to go alongside it, so it’s safe to say things are only on the up for this buzzy band.

Taking inspiration from a multitude of indie pop artists including The 1975, Two Door Cinema Club and Vampire Weekend, it’s clear where their refreshing hooks and danceable melodies have arisen from. Motivated by the surrounding, ever-growing Birmingham music scene, these lads aren’t ones to shy away from hard work, friendly competition or supporting their fellow local bands. “We’re always striving to be the best we can be and on top of our game, and there’s a lot of bands we’d love to see get up to the top as well, including The Assist and The Real Cool.”
