We caught up with emerging new artist Char to find out about everything from her unique perspective on creating music to gaining some insight on her incredible debut single ‘Operator’
Teenage singer, songwriter and producer Char, is very quickly becoming one of the worst kept secrets in new music. The LA artist’s debut single ‘Operator‘ is rapidly capturing the attention of fans and critics alike with its irresistibly sultry production and infectious pop sensibilities.
We have a suspicion that the offering is a glowing example of what is yet to come from the young artist. We caught up with Char for a chat, to find out a little more about one of our favourite emerging new talents.
Who TF is Char?
A female producer, writer, and singer who values the most honest form of self expression in her writing and doesn’t give a fuck if that makes you uncomfortable. 🙂
How long have you been making music?
I’ve always felt emotions very deeply since I was really young, and once I started writing music at about 10 years old, it was like I had discovered a new part of myself that had been always waiting to come out. Since then I haven’t stopped writing. I started producing when I was about 15, and that’s when my music really elevated. I had found a way to really create my musical vision without limitations.
Why do you make music?
I make music because I genuinely could not survive without it. Writing has saved my life countless times. I make music to help myself, and I release it to help others who feel lonely or misunderstood. It means the world to me any time I get a message from someone who tells me I’ve helped them.
What are your biggest influences?
I take inspiration from any life experience that makes me feel something, but I’d say I’m most influenced by relationships. Having a connection with another human being can be one of the most powerful and dangerous things. I’ve always been drawn to writing about the dynamics of love and what comes after.
What would you say has been your best moment so far?
For me choosing a “best moment” is hard. One of my favourite things I’ve done this year has definitely been styling and creating the vision for a music video I’ve been working on. Fashion and aesthetic is something I love almost as much as music. Growing up with synesthesia, I’ve always been so drawn to colour coordination and vibrant fashion, something I love incorporating in my art.
What do you want people to take away from your music?
I want my music to inspire others to speak their truth. I want it to give them the confidence to be brave and bold. I know what it feels like to be made fun of and isolated because of the honesty and vulnerability I portray in my lyrics, and I’ve never let this stop me. My music gives me courage, strength, and empowerment, and I hope it does the same for everyone who listens. I want my listeners to know that they are not alone, and they can get through whatever life throws at them.
What’s your dream “I’ve made it” moment?
Definitely headlining my own tour one day. It’s something I’ve always dreamed of doing. My dad is a musician, so I’ve pretty much grown up on the road and on tour. From backstage and sleeping on the bus to sitting on the sidelines every night of every show, travel and live music has always felt like home to me.
We loved your latest release ‘Operator’, could you tell us some more about it?
Thank you! “Operator” is a song I keep super close to my heart. Although it’s a super fun, upbeat track, I wrote this song about one of the darkest times in my life. Growing up in high school, I had a condition called depersonalization, a disorder where your mind tricks you into believing the things and people around you aren’t real. This song is about the state of mania and losing the sense of your own reality. On the other hand, it’s also whatever the listener feels with this song! It should still 100% be danced to and blasted in your car and experienced however you wish to experience it. This song is lit asf after all.
How have you found the reception that it has recieved?
I’m super pumped about it! “Operator” is my first legit single release on all platforms, and the feedback has been better than I ever could’ve imagined. I’ve had lots of people reach out and talk to me about my music, as well as some new opportunities come up, and it just makes me super grateful and excited for the future!
We can see that you’ve been very busy lately, do you have any upcoming plans that you can tell us about?
I may have a video dropping soon as well as an EP in early 2020… but that’s all a secret 😉
And finally, who is your biggest fan right now?
This is super tough because I’ve got such incredible, supportive people in my life, but I definitely gotta shout out my manager Willie Upbin, (been there since the SoundCloud days!!) and my best friend (& incredible producer) Sora Lopez. I owe a lot to these guys. Love y’all to death.
