We had a chat with Hunger, Vienna’s irresistible alt-pop trio primed for huge things

Daniel Rumpel, Johannes Herbst and Lucas Fendrich are Hunger. Emerging out of Vienna in 2014, the young musicians have been capturing the attention and imagination of listeners their wildly catchy and colourful sound ever since. Their unique sound and song structures have drawn acclaim and attention from a wide variety of sources, with their single ‘Amused’ earning features on Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why and a Mitsubishi ad, racking up 3 million Spotify streams along the way.

2019 sees the trio embark on a plan to release a track once a month. This began a few weeks ago, with the band opening this chapter with this month’s excellent ‘Light It Up’. With the sky seemingly the limit for Hunger, we sought to find out more.

Who TF are Hunger?

Hunger are three friends who started this project as a songwriting team. After signing in LA with our first label, the idea came up to form a real band that would play live and tour around the world.

How long have you been making music?

We’ve all known each other since we were teenagers. We basically grew up in the same area. Music was always a big part of our lives. We were 8-10 years old, maybe a bit younger when we started to show interest in playing music. Hitting the age of 16-17 we played in separate bands. Hunger was formed in late 2014, this would be the first project where the three of us get to work together.

Why do you make music?

Music is our passion, it’s something we believe we are good at and where we can express our creativity in so many different ways. Writing a good song is like having really amazing sex.

What are your biggest influences?

The taste in music is different between the 3 of us. It would be a long list but to narrow it down we would say : The Beatles , Incubus, The 1975, 21 Pilots , Kavinsky, The Neighborhood , Muse , Arctic Monkeys , Hans Zimmer…

What would you say has been your best moment so far?

That’s difficult to say. We’ve had a lot of great moments so far, but our Europe tour was definitely a highlight. Being on tour for over one and a half months playing in 28 cities is an experience you don’t want to miss. That’s one of the big reasons we all love to make music.

What do you want people to take away from your music?

Every person has his own way to connect to music. It would mean a lot to us if one of our tunes plays while someone has an amazing time or experience, so every time that song is on this person thinks about that special moment. That’s the magic about music, it’s like a time machine.

What’s your dream “I’ve made it” moment?

A very common answer would be “if we played a world tour or we hit a number 1, getting 100 million streams!” But to be honest it’s not that, of course at one point you want to earn enough to live a good life, but writing a good song and playing it live, watching people forgetting everything around them, just enjoying themselves, that’s a moment where we would say we made it. And that’s something we have already achieved. Now it’s just about reaching as many people as possible.

You recently dropped your latest single ‘Light It Up’, can you tell us some more about the track?

Light it up is the first release of our monthly release plan. It’s an indie pop song that delivers good vibes. The spirit to go out and do something you will never forget. Creating stories you can maybe tell your grandchildren one day. It’s about living in the moment and taking a moment to be present.

How do you feel that your sound has evolved when compared to some of your earlier work?

We have been writing songs for this project for nearly 4 years now, finally our first album will be released on December 22. Our style has changed over the last years that’s one of the reasons our album is called Mosaik, they all have the our style but in different ways. We think it’s important to develop as an artist and never write a song twice, you can maybe have the same topic or a similar production but the thrill is to make it sound fresh.

What does the near future have in store for Hunger?

Hunger is following their path with monthly releases. That’s something we’ve been working on for a long time. An album will be released in December and maybe we will play another Europe tour in the fall. We will see what the future brings. We are definitely super hyped about how everything is coming along so far and ready for much more to come.

And finally, who is your biggest fan right now?

It’s hard to say because we have so many awesome fans who support and love us, it’s overwhelming. But there is one girl who had supported us since the very beginning. She’s from the Netherlands and her name is Femke. She is amazing.
