Former NEKO PUNCH vocalist Lee Tatlock dishes the dirt on, well, herself!

The career of Lee Tatlock has been quite the journey so far, but in her new project Cream with a K she finally sounds as though she is at home in her own skin.

Breaking away from her previous life as the vocalist of Japanese band NEKO PUNCH in order to recalibrate her focus, London-born Tatlock jumped ship to Los Angeles to find a new sense of self. Late last year she returned with a new moniker and new release, the fuzzy, bubblegum grunge of ‘Terrible Voices’ offsetting her impish vocal and showing that there’s plenty more bark where that came from. Followed by ‘5:35 (Ginza Line)’ and her latest single ‘Stuck in the House’, Tatlock is currently preparing for her new album’s release in the West (it is already available in Japan).

Much like ‘Terrible Voices’, ‘Stuck in the House’ touches upon Tatlock’s own mental health and the agoraphobia that developed whilst living in Tokyo. “The thought of leaving the house would give me anxiety to the point that it would physically make me sick to my stomach,” says Tatlock. “If I could, I would try to avoid leaving the house altogether.

“I think everyone has a brush with mental illness at some point,” she continues. “But you’ve got to know, the only cure is mindful and decided change. It’s hard and very scary but definitely worth it. In a way, I feel this song is a funny little caricature and reminder of a quite morbid and real issue in modern society.”

I used to present a TV show in Japan because my agency said I had to. In Japan, tattooed people aren’t allowed on TV, so I decided to get a big, grumpy lion’s face tattooed on my wrist. This way the network would fire me directly. They didn’t. They just covered it up with make up – and now I have a big tattoo on my wrist I’m not even sure I like, ha ha!
