Rising talent Luke Underhill released the beautiful ‘Wish’ a month ago. We spoke to the singer-songwriter about the track, its inspiration and what to expect next.
‘Wish’ is a fantastic track, what artists were you listening to at the time you wrote it?
I have listened to the same group of artists I have always listened to. Ben Folds, Regina Spektor, Bruce Springsteen, etc… but at the time I wrote this song, Ed Sheeran’s album ‘Divide’ was just released. I’ve always been a big fan of him so that album was playing on repeat through my apartment for a good week. I took a lot of inspiration from his writing style for ‘Wish’.
What was the initial spark of inspiration for writing the song?
It’s really hard to go out of your way to find inspiration. To me, that’s not how inspiration works. It just happens. I was sitting with a buddy of mine and his girlfriend, and we were just talking about anything and everything. The chemistry between them is as good as it gets. Their love for each other is beautiful. I wrote ‘Wish’ about them and their love.
What was the experience of writing The Left Side like?
It got to be very stressful. I knew I was trying to write for a new project, but I didn’t know what I wanted. All I knew was that it had to be different, and by different, I meant upbeat and fun. So that change of writing style for me was a challenge. Wish was a song I wrote after I thought the writing for the project was done. The song fit even though it was an emotional love song. I also had great producers (Mikal Blue and Michael Clouse) that nailed the feel I was looking for in my songs.
How do you approach the storytelling aspect of your songs?
I used to write my songs from a very honest and very personal place. But for this last album I wanted to change things up a bit and write songs based more on stories and related events rather than personal experiences. I want to tell stories with these songs, and I feel like I did a good job at that.
What can we expect from you next?
I’m currently writing for the next project, and it is going to have a different feel to it. Not totally different, but I’m still a new artist, I’m still finding my sound. As I mature as an artist, so will my art. There will be an official video coming out for one of the tracks from “The Left Side”. I do have all of the songs on the album recorded acoustic with videos, so maybe an unplugged version of the album is in the future, to give the songs a different feel. There are also a few songs that didn’t make the cut for “The Left Side” that I plan on using in later projects. I also found out that I have a pretty big following in the Hispanic community, so I plan on releasing a Spanish version of one of my songs soon. Since I am yet to touch on my Hispanic background, it will be a cool and fun thing to do.
