The Academic’s insanely catchy debut album could be one of the biggest releases in indie music in 2018
Fresh-faced, Irish four-piece, The Academic, have steadily built up a substantial fan base through two years of touring across the USA and Europe. Their long-awaited debut album Tales from The Backseat promises to bring even more success for these lads, and it’s clear why. With their irresistibly catchy, indie-pop vibe, and Radio 1 backing them, they’ll have no trouble making their mark on the indie music scene.
The boys met in secondary school and bonded over their shared love of toasted sandwiches, Nicholas Cage films and, of course, music. Despite their very different music tastes, as followers of Brit-pop, rap and metal, each of the boys had a shared love of 2000 NYC rock. Lead by the likes of The Strokes, Interpol and Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, this has rubbed off on The Academic’s music, giving them a subtle edge on the indie music scene with a slightly different sound to most up-and-coming four-pieces.
The album is full of indie anthems from start to finish. The youthful intensity of the lyrics comes through in the sound. The tracks are all from a personal perspective and take from the band member’s own experience, which is charming. The somewhat innocent and cliché lyrics are overshadowed by the catchy melodies that feature on each track. Album opener ‘Permanent Vacation’ has a melodic and summery sound with a wild and vigorous chorus which gives the track an upbeat mood, perfect for shaking the January blues.
Their best-known song ‘Bear Claws’ – which has already been released as a single – is another infectiously catchy track, reflecting their forceful onstage spirit. The band channel their personal outlook from their time growing up in rural Ireland, which gives a lot of the tracks an individual touch. Tales from The Backseat clearly reflects the bands teenage years, documenting the beginning of their journey as a band. From performing at underage school discos to playing sell-out shows across Ireland, the UK and Europe and going on to share a stage with international music giants like Noel Gallagher, Twenty One Pilots and The Strokes. The band are no strangers to success.
The Academic are bold and confident without being cocky. They have refined their energetic and youthful sound and turned it into a trademark which is perfect for their debut album – and this album is full of promise for the boys. With festival appearances, already being lined up it’s clear they are set to go on to even bigger things in 2018.
Tales from The Backseat is released 12th January.
