4 releases, 2 festivals, a European tour and love from Sir Elton John; PLYA have had it all in their debut year.
It has been an incredible year for PLYA since they released their debut single ‘Thinking of You’ back in October 2017. It wasn’t long until they released its accompanying video (which was viewed almost 10,000 times in the first two days) and received features on Spotify’s Hiptronix Fresh Finds playlist, Apple Music’s Alternative Hits and Midnight City playlists and Vevo’s Incoming Pop Playlist.
The following month, PLYA performed a live session at idobi Radio, playing a stripped-back version of ‘Thinking of You’, in preparation of playing a packed-out headline show at Camden Assembly. To finish off the year, ‘Thinking of You’ was remixed by Leicester duo Dark Dark Horse.
Kicking off 2018, PLYA were featured on again Apple Music, this time on their Alternative Hits playlist and didn’t keep fans waiting long as they released their second single ‘Adrenaline’. The track received its debut radio play on Shell Zenner’s Amazing Radio show in February, which was shortly followed by the release of its accompanying video.
March was a busy month for the trio as they played multiple shows including Thekla, Bristol supporting K.Flay, BIRTHDAYS in Dalston supporting R.LUM.R and thousand island, Islington supporting The Aces. Plus, they filmed a live session of ‘Adrenaline’ at idobi Radio and released their third single ‘Feast My Eye’ which appeared on 4 Topsify playlists on Spotify & Apple Music!
The accompanying video for ‘Feast My Eye’ came out in April and also featured on a Vevo playlist. PLYA were shortly excited to discover they were chosen for BBC Music Introducing London’s Featured Artist!
PLYA re-mixed Mike Shinoda’s opening track to his recent album ‘Place To Start’, and were thrilled to see Shinoda share it on Twitter. Plus, the video for ‘Thinking of You’ won Best Music Video at Los Angeles Reel Film Festival! As if that wasn’t enough, Sir Elton John himself hand-picked ‘Feast My Eye’ to play on his #RocketHour radio show on Beats1 and added it to his Spotify playlist. If there’s a playlist to be on, it’s that one.
Over the summer, PLYA performed at Brighton’s Great Escape Festival and their first ever show in Spain at O Son do Camiño Festival. Last month was a massive month for the Londoners as they released not one, but TWO singles: ‘Innocent’ and ‘Addiction’! ‘Innocent’ received its first radio spin from BBC Music Introducing London before they embarked on their European tour, stopping off at Munich, Frankfurt, Cologne, Amsterdam and Electrowerkz in Angel, London in support of The Night Game.
The video for ‘Innocent’ was released at the start of this month which Julia explained further on Facebook: “When we were in L.A. recording ‘Innocent’, I was captivated by how so many people travel there from around the world with their highest hopes coming face to face with a cutthroat reality. That imagery really resonated with us, so we decided to travel back and film it where the song was inspired – in the depths of a dark, unrelenting city that will be conquered.”
PLYA provided us with a more personal insight into their year: “Since our debut release ‘Thinking of You’ we have gone on to release singles “Feast My Eye”, “Innocent” and “Addiction”. We’ve been playing live which is our favourite thing to do, shows alongside The Aces, K Flay and The Night Game – and we sold out our own headline show at London’s Camden Assembly Hall. In April we were selected as BBC Introducing London’s Featured Artist, and recently we’ve been in the studio writing so we’re excited to release more music soon!”
