‘No Fanfare’? Charles Watson’s debut deserves one!
Location: London, UK
FFO: Slow Club, The Surfing Magazines
Label: Moshi Moshi
Charles Watson‘s debut is five and a half minutes of heaven. Opening with synths which seem to beam down from above, ‘Fanfare’ moves on to quickly include rapidly strum acoustic guitars before Watson’s ethereal folk tones take centre stage. Gradually the track builds to include synths and then a symphonic explosion of horns and drums reminiscent of the sounds of the Elephant 6 collective. Electric guitars at the end lead to an strange space-age outro, which plays out until a single strum concludes the track.
Combining the mishmash of styles which characterize the Surfing Magazines with the angelic and anthemic quality of Slow Club, Charles Watsons’ first solo outing does not disappoint. We cannot wait for more to come!
