So, it’s that time of year again: the DR. MARTEN’S STAND FOR SOMETHING TOUR is upon us, and 2016 sees it better than ever. Since the 1960s, the iconic footwear brand has become synonymous with music, subculture, and alternative living in the UK. From the skinheads to the punks all the way to present day, owning a pair of Docs is practically a right of passage for any passionate youth that feels the need to belong to something of importance.

So naturally, the STAND FOR SOMETHING tour is the next step in giving artists with a whole lot to say a platform to do it, and 2016’s picks are in good stock, with previous performers including Palma Violets, The Wytches, Dutch Uncles and the mighty Twin Atlantic. Four acts take to intimate UK venues this October and November with one still yet to be announced; let’s get more acquainted with this year’s roster…

Entering with a deft swagger, London duo FORMATION have been causing more than a bit of a flurry with their energetic and vibrant brand of electronica. Taking their Northern Soul influence on a detour via LCD Soundsystem, their exotic beats (PS. did someone say cowbell?) and furious grooves have earned them a live reputation to be envied. High octane recent single ‘Pleasure’ is the perfect example of what Formation are about.

She may only be 23, but PAIGEY CAKEY has been doing her thing (and doing it well) since she was in her mid-teens, and as a triple threat, she’s at no risk of reaching creative exhaustion any time soon. From acting in TV and films such as 2011’s Attack The Block to writing, rapping and singing on her handful of EPs, it is clear that the Hackney MC knows exactly who she wants to be and what she wants to achieve. Having already supported iconic rappers Eve and Lil Kim, Paigey Cakey’s blend of grime, punchy lyrics and soulful interjections has made her one to watch. Recent single ‘Boogie’ is a smart-mouthed smash.

The past few years have been a bit of a whirlwind for VANT; this year has already seen them perform at some of the best UK festivals including Reading and Leeds and the big one, Glastonbury. With their bolshy, scuzz-ridden rock it is only a matter of time until the band level up to grander things, and as one of the few rock bands currently getting political in their songs, their profile is of utmost importance, given the sheer amount of bands otherwise singing about love in a climate of political turmoil. As such, the VANT will no doubt be at home on the Stand For Something stage, digging out fan faves like ‘The Answer’ for a raucous set.

As a recently announced final addition, emo-pop rockers YOU ME AT SIX hit Camden’s Dingwalls on 26th Nov ahead of the release of their fifth studio album Night People. Having kept their momentum going for over a decade and with an ever loyal fanbase, the band have a wealth of hits to dig out of their pockets. It has been a while since You Me At Six have played a venue quite this small, and with Dingwalls being renowned for holding many a boisterous crowd, the combination of great venue and anthemic fan favourites will no doubt make this a gig to remember.
